One of the most common upgrades we perform on Kansas City homes is an electrical panel upgrade. That’s because, with today’s electronics, old 60 amp service just isn’t sufficient to run all of our TVs, appliances, video games, alarm systems, etc. that we use on a daily basis. So how do you know if you need a panel upgrade? Here is a list of questions that should help you determine if your breaker box is in need of help:
If the answer is yes to any of those questions, it may be time for a Service Panel Upgrade. With the proliferation of more electronic devices in a home, older electrical panels simply do not have the power to supply today’s needs. Older breaker panels can become overloaded and overworked, which turns into a safety and fire hazard for your home. So before your electrical panel gives out on its terms, replace it on your terms.
Another problem we see with breaker boxes is outdated panels. These pose several hazards. First, if overloaded, old panels can spark and cause a fire. Most older panels are 60 amps. The minimum size, or number of amps, your panel needs to be is usually 100 amps. Any smaller, and you will have a hard time getting insured because it is a safety hazard. Your home’s electrical panel needs to be large enough to handle the everyday load we put on it.
When was your home built? If it was before 1980, your electrical system is out of date. Homes that are 20 years old or older weren’t wired to handle modern day electrical demands. Today, homes are built with a service rated for 100 amps. Older homes usually use a 60-amp electrical service. How safe is your home? The NEC (National Electrical Code)
changes over the years. One of the most common features missing in older homes is Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters commonly called GFCIs. They are required by code in many places in your home. A GFCI is an inexpensive device that can save you from a fatal electrical shock. If a piece of electrical equipment is damaged, it can create an unintentional electrical path between itself and the ground. If a person touches it, they can be burned, shocked, or even killed. All receptacles in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors and in unfinished basements should have GFCI protection. Look for a red button in the middle of the outlet. It will pop out if there is a surge in electricity rendering the receptacle dead until you press the button to reset it.
